Pressure Regulator

Gas regulators are mechanical devices that we drive through every day in our cars and at home without giving them a second thought. The basic function of regulators is similar, but there are numerous variations. The regulator uses an element that detects pressure, usually a dialythm made of fabric, to control a valve's position and restrict the flow of gas.

The gas pressure coming from the pipeline or from the house is sensed by this mechanism and it adjusts position of the valve plug to match it to the demand from the house. As the demand for gas in the home increases the valve will open further, increasing the flow of gas.

The valve plug stays closed until the demand of the house decreases. The valve then opens to increase the flow. This process is referred to as sizing and it is the fundamental function of the regulator.

When the valve is opened it creates pressure up in the main chamber price of patio gas the regulator, which is attached to the hose outlet port by a venturi tube (see the image). The pressure can be regulated by turning the handle or screw located on the outside of the regulator. When the screw is turned counterclockwise, it increases the pressure. Thermocouples are superior to other sensors, for instance thermistors. They can detect extremely high temperatures and function in corrosive environments.

The measuring (or hot) junction is created by joining two metals that are not compatible at one end, while the other end, known as the reference (or cold) junction, is kept at the same temperature. Thermocouples generate small voltages, but they are passive devices that do not require power to function. The voltage generated is proportional to the temperature difference between the measuring junction and the reference junction. Thermocouple manufacturers as well as metrology standards organizations such as NIST provide reference tables of the function E (T) displaystyle scriptstyle e(T) for each specific thermocouple type.

There are three main types of thermocouple junctions- an exposed, grounded, and wire that is welded. The type of junction that is exposed extends out of the protective sheath, and provides the fastest response. In the event of measurements under corrosive conditions, a grounded thermocouple should be utilized. A thermocouple that is welded is physically insulated from the sheath with mgO powder to stop the penetration of moisture or gas which could cause mistakes.

If a thermocouple becomes damaged, it is usually caused by a lack of polarity. If the sheath is not been polarized, both ends of the thermocouple may have different voltages at their measurement junction. This could result in an inaccurate reading, or even damage the instrument. A sensor that isn't properly calibrated or installed can also cause a faulty thermocouple.

Thermostat

Gas patio heaters unlike electric heaters which are wired to the wall, are portable and run on natural gas or propane. The thermostats regulate the flow energy to these cylinders so that they don't overflow but can still provide heat when needed. The thermostat detects the temperature of the air passing over it. The thermostat also senses when the room is cooling down to a comfortable temperature and turns off the heating.

Digital thermostats are the most popular. It utilizes a microcontroller that converts a changing electrical resistance into a reading of temperature. It is able to do this more accurately than previous mercury switch thermostats that used a mercury coil with three wires inside that would move based on temperature. This allowed the thermostat to tilt the mercury switch that was connected to an electrical circuit that was used to power an air conditioner or heater by turning it off and on.

Another type of thermostat is one that is mechanical. The thermostat is opened when the wax inside the small cylinder begins to melt, which is around 180 degrees F. (Different thermostats have different opening temperatures). A rod that is connected to the valve then presses into this wax and opens the valve when it's hot. As the room cools down the wax shrinks and the rod is pushed into the cylinder to close the valve.

You can also program thermostats to alter the temperature at various time of the day. You can reduce energy usage by programming your heating to switch off and on when you are working, or asleep, instead of being on all the time. You can also set your thermostat to turn on earlier to ensure that you arrive home to a comfortable temperature. Thermostats often come with a feature known as a heat anticipator, which stops the heating system from turning on too early. This is due to the fact that certain areas of the home reach the desired temperature before the thermostat has even been set.

Pilot Light

Many modern homes, heating systems and furnaces have eliminated entirely with pilot lights. However older homes still rely on them to ignite gas in the burner chamber. It's essential to know how to safely to relight the pilot light in case it ever fails.

A pilot light generates a small flame that heats the thermocouple. This produces electricity and keeps the outdoor gas patio heater valve open. If the pilot flame goes out the thermocouple cools down and stops generating electricity, thereby closing the gas valve. Pilot lights are utilized in a wide range of propane- and natural gas-powered appliances, including water heaters, fireplaces, furnaces, ranges, barbecues and hot tubs.

To relight a pilot, you must first turn off the gas on the appliance. Then, you have to take out any doors or panels that might hinder getting to the pilot light. Follow the instructions on the front of the unit to open the tube for the pilot light. Once you've reopened the pilot then turn the knob on the gas valve to "on".
